Ugly giveaway from Auston Matthews gives the Bruins the win in overtime.

A bad giveaway from the captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs costs his team dearly in overtime.

The Boston Bruins could not have asked for a better gift in overtime.

Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews will be kicking himself for this play for a while I fear after a brutal giveaway at the most crucial point in the game resulted in a win for arguably his team's greatest rival.

The Maple Leafs traveled to Boston on Saturday night to face off against the Bruins, a team that has simply gotten the better of the Leafs in recent years, and 60 minutes was not enough to determine a winner. Although the Bruins held a lead in the third period, Matthews and the Leafs would rally back with Matthew himself scoring the tying goal with just over a minute left, one that would eventually force overtime.

Unfortunately for Matthews his heroics would be short lived as, just moments later, a bad giveaway from the Leafs captain would seal the deal for the Bruins. Matthews attempted to pass the puck off the ice by banking it off the boards, but David Pastrnak saw the play coming a mile away and cut off his pass, giving Pastrnak and Bruins captain Brad Marchand a golden opportunity to end the game.

The Bruins duo would do just that, despite an incredible initial save from Maple Leafs goaltender Anthony Stolarz, and the look on Matthews' face said it all.

Former National Hockey League player Kevin Bieksa quickly cut Matthews some slack however, pointing out that the Leafs captain was likely exhausted given how the game had played out late in the third period.

"Live by the sword die by the sword," said Bieksa. "Matthews and Marner played four and a half minutes out of the last seven... so they are on fumes in overtime."

A tough loss for the Maple Leafs, especially given the opponent, with the team already struggling to start the season.
