Canada chooses potential replacement for Sidney Crosby.
Team Canada chooses potential replacement for Sidney Crosby at the Four Nations Face-Off.
There has been plenty of drama surrounding the availability of Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby when it comes to the upcoming Four Nations Face-Off and, although we still don't have a concrete answer regarding Crosby's participation, we do have some idea of what his replacement could look like if he is indeed forced to miss the tournament.
On Saturday morning, National Hockey League insider Darren Dreger revealed that the management staff overseeing Canada's team at the Four Nations Face-Off has reached out to Winnipeg Jets star forward Mark Scheifele regarding the tournament. According to Dreger, Scheifele has been informed that he will be the replacement for Crosby should he be unable to play for Canada at the tournament, or in the event of any other injury knocking out one of Canada's players from the tournament.
The news will likely come as very little surprise to most with Scheifele being widely considered a major snub when the roster was initially announced. Many felt that Scheifele should have been included in the tournament to begin with, and no doubt this will feel like a little bit of vindication for those who vocally supported Scheifele when he was left off the roster.
The Jets forward has appeared in 56 NHL games thus far this season and has performed admirably, scoring 31 goals and adding 32 assists for 63 points on the season already.
Only time will tell if Scheifele will actually get to play as we are still waiting for an official announcement regarding Crosby's status for the tournament.
