Rod Brind'Amour addresses losing both his goalies before the playoffs.
A tough spot for the head coach.
The Carolina Hurricanes are in the middle of an incredible regular season run, one that will see them crowned as kings of the National Hockey League's Metropolitan Division this season and one that has them bound for the Stanley Cup playoffs.
In spite of the fact that they have done everything right all season long though, the Hurricanes now find themselves in a major crisis situation. On Sunday afternoon the Hurricanes lost veteran backup goaltender Antti Raanta to injury when he pulled himself out of a game against the New York Islanders after seemingly injuring himself while making a save. That in and of itself would be a less than ideal scenario for a team heading into the Stanley Cup playoffs, especially considering that Raanta has been a very good backup for the Hurricanes this season with a 2.44 goals against average and a .912 save percentage over 26 appearances, but when you consider the Hurricanes' current predicament the injury to Raanta risks being a complete disaster.
Currently, Hurricanes goaltender Frederik Andersen is also sidelined as the result of an injury. Andersen was injured earlier this month during a game against the Colorado Avalanche when he fell awkwardly in his own crease and appeared to injure his leg and/or knee. This now has the Hurricanes in a situation where they are heading into the playoffs without their starting goaltender and without their backup as well, with only a few days between now and the start of those playoffs.
On Sunday, Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind'Amour was asked about the current goaltending situation and his answer was rather blunt.
"What are you going to do, cry over it?" asked the veteran head coach.
That response also betrays just how dire a predicament this may prove to be for the Hurricanes, with Brind'Amour simply acknowledging that there is nothing he or anyone else can do about it. Brind'Amour also added that he hopes the injuries to both goalies prove to be relatively minor, but didn't provide any more clarity regarding the nature of those injuries or when we might see either Raanta or Andersen back for the Hurricanes.
