New policy issued following several incidents of Canadian fans booing the Star Spangled Banner
This one needs to be taken seriously. Full story below:
The ol’ ‘Star Spangled Banner’ has had a rough week North of the border, and so has O Canada South of it, so much so that many statements have been made in making sure that no anthem gets booed at a specific event.
Fans in Ottawa, Calgary and Vancouver all loudly boo’ed the singing of American National Anthem this past weekend amidst economic threats made against Canada from U.S. President Donald Trump. The Canadian anthem was booed on Monday when the Senators faced the Predators in Nashville.
Now, ahead of the peewee tournament that begins next week in Quebec City, city officials are reminding the public not to boo the 11- and 12-year-old American hockey players who will be in town for the event, according to the Canadian Press.
Mayor Bruno Marchand told a news conference that he understands the desire to send a message to the United States, but that ordinary American visitors don’t represent their president. He added how tourism is important for Quebec City and he wants the players and their parents to feel comfortable and welcome.
Patrick Dom, manager of the Quebec City International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament, revealed that dozens of U.S. teams will be visiting the city for the event, which officially begins on Feb. 12.
I completely agree with the officials : the poor kids do not need to get mixed up into this. We just hope that all the players will be cheered on by the crowd as they step on the ice and can have fun in this tournament.
