The summer was rough for the Edmonton Oilers and the family of one special fan. Oilers superfan Ben Stelter passed away in August after a bout with glioblastoma — a form of brain cancer. The kid was only six years old…
As the Oilers stepped on the ice for their first game of the 2022-23 season, the team took the time to honour Ben in a special tribute that ended in a moving ovation for the young boy.
Many players appeared sad and fans were crying in the stands for this beautiful tribute for Ben, gone way too soon.
Back on March 24, Stelter had joined the Oilers for their pregame skate and then celebrated with the team in the dressing room, following Edmonton’s win over the San Jose Sharks. He was awarded a game MVP helmet. He continued showing up to support the Oilers, who at one point, won 10 consecutive games with Stelter in attendance. He captured the hearts of all fans with his cries to “play La Bamba” after wins and developed a close relationship with captain Connor McDavid.
We understand why it was important for the Oilers and all of the fanbase to remember Ben and play this season for him.
“Play La Bamba” boys! Starting tonight against the visiting Vancouver Canucks.
