Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid was frustrated in the dressing room, following his team’s 4-3 shootout loss at the hands of the St. Louis Blues on Thursday.
That’s because McDavid thought he had recorded an assist as Leon Draisaitl gave the Oilers the win on an overtime time goal, but it was called back, prompting him to voice his frustration with NHL officiating.
“Since I was a kid, I thought if you have possession of the puck (going over the blue line) that’s onside. If I had possession or not, I guess that’s the judgment call,” McDavid said.
“The league’s got to clarify some of these rules. What’s a kick? What’s offside? What’s goalie interference? It kind of depends on the night, I guess. It’s disappointing. Obviously, we should never have even let it get to that point.”
With just under three minutes to go in overtime, McDavid carried the puck across the Blues’ line and sent it to Draisaitl who found the back of Jordan Binnington’s net.
The play was offside — at least, that’s what the NHL ruled.
The Oilers then deflated and lost in the shootout, dropping to 17-13-1 on the season with the loss, failing to jump the Seattle Kraken for third in the Pacific Division.
McDavid, who scored his 27th goal of the season in the second period and continues to lead the league in goals and points, probably hopes his status in the NHL will get the officials to review their offside standards…
