On Thursday night, Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid challenged all NHL and hockey players out there for a great cause.
The Oilers superstar joined entrepreneur Ashif Mawji in a video in which they pledge $100,000 towards the newly launched Ben Stelter Fund, to get better outcomes for youth that are battling cancer.
In his message that was shared on his personal Twitter account, McDavid asked all athletes and hockey players to give to the Ben Stelter Fund.
As you surely remember, Oilers superfan Ben Stelter passed away in August after a bout with glioblastoma — a form of brain cancer. The kid was only six years old…
Ahead of the Oilers’ season home opener in October, the team took the time to honour Ben in a special tribute that ended in a moving ovation for the young boy.
Ben’s father Mike shared the post put together by McDavid, thanking both the Oilers’ forward and Mawji for joining the cause.
Back on March 24, Stelter had joined the Oilers for their pregame skate and then celebrated with the team in the dressing room, following Edmonton’s win over the San Jose Sharks. He was awarded a game MVP helmet. He continued showing up to support the Oilers, who at one point, won 10 consecutive games with Stelter in attendance. He captured the hearts of all fans with his cries to “play La Bamba” after wins and developed a close relationship with McDavid.
We get why McDavid is getting involved and love that he is challenging other NHLers to put their money in a great cause.
For Ben!
