You can’t help but feel for the guy…

Patrik Laine returned to practice Monday for the first time since two life-altering events. One more tragic than the other. Laine returned after sustaining an oblique strain Nov. 3 at the Colorado Avalanche. But he was also away, back in Finland, for the unexpected death of his father.

Upon meeting with reporters after practice, it was easy to tell that Laine is still deeply hurt by his father’s departure and is struggling to keep it together as he answers questions. Harri Laine was 54 when he died unexpectedly on Nov. 21. No cause of death has been announced by the family.

He’s been my … No. 1 fan and supporter, always,” Laine said of his father. “Not that my mom and sister haven’t been, but hockey was kind of our thing, our passion. I definitely wouldn’t be here without him.

“He always watched my game, ever since I was a kid. He always wakes up at night to watch my games, so it’s definitely tough. I’m losing my best friend.”

Despite the time difference, his father would wake up early in order to never miss a game and watch his son in action. We can only imagine that the first time back in uniform will be tough for Laine and his family.

“Every single game, for as long as I’ve been here (in North America),” Laine said. “That’s how much he loved the game, loved watching me play and loved watching how I was doing.”

While Laine admitted it was good to reconnect with teammates on Monday, it is heartbreaking to see him in grief like so. The coaching staff and the entire dressing room support him at this very difficult time.

“It’s definitely been the hardest time of my life, for sure,” Laine said. “It’s been difficult dealing with it. I’m still going through it, it’s still … on my mind quite a bit.

“This helps, being here, and having something to do during the day, something to look forward to.”

My heart goes on to Laine… poor guy. We bet his father will keep on watching him whenever he may now as he rests in peace.
