Canucks owner Francesco Aquilini rips Vancouver media.
Vancouver media called out.
It appears as though the Vancouver Canucks aren't exactly happy with the type of media coverage they have been getting, or at the very least it seems that is how those at the upper echelons of the organization are feeling.
The Canucks made some sweeping changes this week when they fired head coach Travis Green to make room for incoming head coach Bruce Boudreau, and they topped that off by also firing general manager Jim Benning and replacing him with veteran National Hockey League executive Jim Rutherford. As a result it has been a busy week for the Canucks but from what I have seen the coverage of these moves has largely been positive, with many feeling that changes were long overdue in the organization.
On Saturday however Canucks owner Francesco Aquilini took to social media to decry the coverage his team has received, specifically as it pertains to the recent moves that have been made by the team. Aquilini seems to feel that, regardless of what he does, he is constantly on the receiving end of negative press from local reporters.
For the sake of preserving the integrity of his message, here is what he wrote unedited:
Gotta love media in Vancouver. Two weeks ago: "What's wrong with Aquilini? Why isn't he cleaning house? Can't he see it's a disaster? Why's he so slow to act?" Two weeks later: "Why's he moving so fast? Why's he cleaning house? Can't he see it's a bad look?" Kinda funny actually.
The timing of the comments is odd given that coverage of the team has largely been positive since the moves were made, especially considering the early results the Canucks have had off the back of those moves. Bruce Boudreau won his first game behind the bench of the Canucks and currently has the team riding a 3 game winning streak, but something no doubt set off Aquilini and prompted this response on social media.
Not only has Boudreau proven to be a solid hire thus far, but Rutherford is also widely respected around the league.
