Utah HC changes its final three name choices!
Smart move! What the Hell is a Wasatch anyways!?!?!?
UPDATE: This just in, after asking fans yesterday to vote on their favorite potential new name for their franchise, the Utah Hockey Club has made a change.
Yesterday the team asked fans to vote on one of three otpions:
Utah Hockey Club
Utah Mammoth
Utah Wasatch
Now, if you're like most people and you don't live in the state of Utah you're likely saying, "What the Hell is a Wasatch? That's stupid!"
Utah ownership has heard that feedback and have officially replaced "Wasatch" (A Utah mountain range btw) with "Outlaws".
Check it out:
I won't lie... Utah Outlaws kind of rolls off the tongue nicely.
Given the three options yesterday I was firmly a Utah Mammoth supporter, but I think I might prefer Utah Outlaws now.
Thoughts?
Read below for yesterday's report on this developing story, published by Hockey Feed staff write Chis Gosselin.
It is now down to three names for the NHL franchise in Utah. On Wednesday evening, the fanbase in Utah can vote on three potential names — and two logos — for their new team:
Utah Hockey Club
Utah Mammoth
Utah Wasatch
Yeti was an option when the franchise first joined the NHL after the Arizona Coyotes moved to Utah, but because of the United States Patent and Trademark Office rejected that suggestion due to the “likelihood of confusion.
“We engaged with the Yeti Cooler Company,” Smith Entertainment Group executive Mike Maughan said Wednesday. “They have a unique and strong trademark on ‘Yeti’ and ‘Yetis’ on clothing or other licensed gear… We were not able to come to a coexistence agreement.”
It does not matter if Yeti is out because, as Mark Lazerus puts it, Yeti would have been awful too. The insider out of Chicago does not understand how fans are down to these horrible names and how the HC remains the best option.
“Of these, UHC is the only option. But what a disaster. How can these be the next three best names after Yetis?
Just be the Salt Lake Somethings. The Salt Lake Squirrels. The Salt Lake Spoonbills. Spiders. Tarantulas. The Salt Lake Not Singular Roller Hockey International Names.”
“The voting will be done by fans who attend Utah’s next four home games, beginning tonight (Pittsburgh) through Feb. 4 (Philadelphia). Stations will be set up around Delta Center to select a name and logo, not yet publicly revealed for copyright protection. Asked if he was worried someone would take a photo and leak details, Maughan pointed to Utah Jazz redesigns that stayed private while going through a similar process, adding, “We have faith in the community… to do this in a respectful way.”
There are only two logos instead of three because “Hockey Club” and “Wasatch” would have the same outcome: a mythical snow creature, “fierce and appropriate for an NHL team,” Maughan said.
The winning choices will not be announced during this season, though some believe it will be unveil when Utah makes its 2025 first-round draft pick.
