Update: John Tavares out of Leafs' lineup long-term

An update from TSN insider Pierre LeBrun following today's announcement from the Leafs.

UPDATE: TSN insider Pierre LeBrun is now reporting that John Tavares will be out 2-4 weeks following today's announcement that the Toronto Maple Leafs have moved him to the injury reserve.

From LeBrun today on TSN's 'Insider Trading' segment:

"What I was told... is that we might be looking at 2 to 4 weeks for John Tavares to be out. But really the key piece of information here is that the Leafs will have a better idea in about 7 to 10 days where John Tavares is at. Until then though it's a bit of guesswork. But... I will guess and I would guess that it's about 2 weeks that John Tavares is out."

This just in, the Toronto Maple Leafs have announced that forward John Tavares has been moved to injured reserve after suffering an injury in practice yesterday. In a corresponding move the team has recalled Fraser Minten from the AHL's Toronto Marlies.

By moving Tavares to IR, he's guaranteed to be out at least a week, if not longer. Stay tuned for a more detailed update on Tavares' status from head coach Craig Berube.

Read below for our earlier report on Tavares' injury from Hockey Feed staff writer Chris Gosselin.

The Toronto Maple Leafs were holding a practice on Wednesday morning ahead of their upcoming game against the New Jersey Devils on Thursday night when veteran forward John Tavares suffered an injury.

During a power-play drill with some teammates, Tavares appeared to get hurt and immediately left practice. He was limping and favouring his right leg as he headed back to the team’s dressing room.

Mark Masters posted a video (down below) showing Tavares slowly getting to his feet in the corner and skating out of the rink slumped over.

After practice, head coach Craig Berube was asked about the status of his veteran player, but couldn’t know provided much detail on Tavares’ condition or even if he will be able to dress for the contest against the Devils tomorrow.

"I didn’t even see it…Hopefully, he is ok.”

Losing Tavares would be a tough blow for the Maple Leafs as the veteran forward has been on fire this season. In 44 games so far in 2024-25, he has recorded 20 goals and 22 assists for 42 points.

He finished last season with 29 goals and 36 assists for 65 points in 80 games just before he elinquished the captaincy to Auston Matthews.

I’m guess a team update will come once Tavares undergoes evaluation and the Maple Leafs announce their lineup for the match against New Jersey. For now, his status for tomorrow remains unknown.
