Trade scenario between Oilers and Flames being considered!
Could the Alberta rivals strike a deal?
Dressing a list of the best five right handed defensemen who could bring immediate help to the struggling Edmonton Oilers, Allan Mitchell of the Athletic did the unthinkable when he suggested all-time rival Calgary Flames blue liner Rasmus Andersson as one of the best option out there.
“If it was purely a case of a hockey trade, Andersson would be the top name on this list,” Mitchell admits.
Andersson’s name has come up a few times in trade circles since the summer and some wondered early on in the season if he could join a Stanley Cup contender closer to the trade deadline in March. However, no one expected the Flames to have a hot start in 2024-25. They have a 5-3-1 record and will be facing the Utah Hockey Club later on tonight. You have to wonder if GM Craig Conroy is even considering entertaining calls on Andersson, to which Mitchell adds “trading Andersson to Edmonton could be a career-ending move.”
However, the insider admits that Andersson may be the best option out there for Edmonton. He also suggest defensemen like Buffalo Sabres’ Henri Jokiharju, Ottawa Senators’ Artem Zub, Nashville Predators’ Alexandre Carrier and Montreal Canadiens’ Justin Barron, but is clear that Andersson would be the best trade candidate for Edmonton.
“As a possible trade option for Edmonton, Andersson is something close to ideal. He is a fine two-way defender with legit offence, a long track record of success versus elites and an agitating style that would be effective on a real contender.
"For Bowman, the price would be dear, more than any other team would have to pay. For Conroy, it’s an easy no for a valuable player who is a perfect fit for the Oilers. No matter the offer.”
But I am moves out of Calgary have stunned fans in past seasons. Could we be on the verge of the most shocking trade of all as this could become a real option in weeks to come?
