When reporting about pending unrestricted free agent goalies, The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun of course spoke about Marc-Andre Fleury of the Minnesota Wild. The team would love to keep him, especially with the amazing run he’s been on with his new club and heading into the postseason.
But there is more than one problem ahead…
As LeBrun points out, sources indicated the Wild would like to keep Fleury despite their limited salary-cap space for 2022-23 but there’ve been no discussions yet.
If money is available and the financial issue is solved, the next question is: does Fleury want to stay in Minny and possibly hang up the skates there? There is no doubt that, as of now, the Wild is in a great spot to be top contender, especially with how well Flower is performing, but we all know his family comes first when he comes to signing contracts.
When he accepted the trade from the Vegas Golden Knights to the Chicago Blackhawks, he had come to terms with it because there was a year left to his deal and could then speak to his family about what’s next. Some believe he accepted a trade to Minnesota because it was fairly close to Chicago where his family remains.
Would the Fleury gang be willing to move to Minnesota for the rest of Flower’s career, if the Wild can afford him?
A lot of tough choices to come and that’s both for Fleury and the Wild…
