Tom Wilson’s latest comments on Alex Ovechkin’s injury worry fans...
Ovi’s teammate reveal how emotional the last few days have been in Washington since the captain was injured. You have to wonder if he was supposed to share as much:
The unfortunate news was confirmed on Tuesday when the Washington Capitals announced that superstar Alex Ovechkin was listed as week-to-week with a lower-body injury.
Ovechkin was hurt early in the third period when he had a knee-on-knee collision with Utah’s Jack McBain. He had to be helped off the ice after the hit. The Caps’ captain had scored twice before the injury to give him a league-high 15 goals this season and bringing him within 26 goals of tying Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894 career tallies.
At practice on Wednesday, Tom Wilson was asked about his captain’s injury and what it meant for the group. When answering the question, Wilson got fans thinking that Ovechkin might be out much longer than expected.
Wilson mentioned how emotional it was to see the superstar injured and the impact it has had on the Capitals’ dressing room.
“It was emotional at first, to be completely honest. He’s the hottest guy in the league. He’s chasing something bigger than hockey. Everyone in the hockey world just feels that little bit of letdown, that emotion, that you’re just pulling for him. He’s putting everything that he has into it. He feels all that pressure and the whole world of hockey is just rooting him on. To come in (the locker room) and see that he’s hurt, it hurt a little bit as a teammate. But at the end of the day, that’s hockey, it’s part of the gig, stuff happens. Guys bounce back from injuries and he’s going to do the same.”
It sounds like Wilson might know that Ovechkin will be out a while.
However, head coach Spencer Carbery said on Wednesday that the injury was not season-ending.
“He’s going to be out for a little bit. I think week-to-week is pretty accurate… this isn’t something where his season is ending.”
He added that there will be an update on Ovechkin later in the day after they meet with team doctors and he undergoes further evaluation.
Being without Ovechkin will be a challenge for the Caps, who will need to step up for the captain during his absence.
