Forward Alex Formenton didn’t come to term with the Ottawa Senators before the restricted free agent deadline on Dec. 1 of last year, and no one really knows what his next move will be to return to the NHL. However, when it comes to his professional career, the forward has made the decision to signed a two-month contract to return Ambri-Piotta in the top hockey league in Switzerland, the National League, in which there is a clause that states that he has permission to return to the NHL at any time during the duration of the contract. The deal only goes until December 31, 2023, which coincides with the end of the Spengler Cup.

There has been so much chatter on what happened with Formenton and the Senators last season, with some pundits wondering if the contract stalemate could have been linked Canada’s 2018 World Junior team that’s under investigation over allegations of sexual assault. There is no indication that Formenton was involved, however, chatter has grown since he never commented on the incident. During that tournament, he scored two goals and posted four points in seven games en route to winning gold with Canada.

The investigation is ongoing and the names of the players involved are yet to be divulged. When he first signed HC Ambrì Piotta, the team had made a statement that Formenton fully collaborated with the investigation and there was no reason not to assert the presumption of innocence against him.

In 79 games in 2021-22 with Ottawa, Formenton posted 18 goals and 32 points. He was selected 47th overall by the Senators at the 2017 NHL Draft, and has put 23 goals and 39 points in 109 career NHL games.

Could he get another shot in the NHL after or during this stint in Switzerland?
