Stefan Noesen ejected after destroying Tage Thompson.
Stefan Noesen nearly takes Tage Thompson's head off and gets tossed from the game.
The lack of a reaction here from the Buffalo Sabres was more than a little disappointing and I don't believe for a second that Sabres forward Tage Thompson is going to be happy when he looks back at this one.
On Sunday afternoon, New Jersey Devils forward Stefan Noesen was ejected from the third period of a game between the Devils and Sabres after he delivered a nasty looking hit to the aforementioned Tage Thompson. It was one of those hits where you don't really have to wonder about whether or not there was head contact, with Thompson's helmet sent flying as Noesen nearly took Thompson's head off.
Thompson was reaching for a loose puck and was in a very vulnerable position with his body extended and his head exposed and, rather than letting up on the hit, Noesen would explode through Thompson's exposed head sending him crashing down to the ice.
Here's a look at the replay of the hit:
Thompson was understandably out of it and he struggled to get off the ice and head back to the Sabres locker room while the officials held a very quick review of the video before confirming their call that Noesen had been awarded a match penalty and was being tossed from the game.
As I mentioned none of the Sabres around the incident reacted to the play at all, which can't feel great if you're Thompson and on the receiving end of a hit like this.
