Following Friday night’s blockbuster trade that sent star forward Mikko Rantanen from the Colorado Avalanche to the Carolina Hurricanes, Pittsburgh Penguins beat writer Josh Yohe felt the need to debunk the recent trade rumors swirling around captain Sidney Crosby.
As soon as the monster deal went down, some pundits, including Spittin’ Chiclets podcasters (and former Crosby teammates) Paul Bissonnette and Ryan Whitney suggested that the Penguins could be trading their captain to Colorado for him to finally join and play with close friend and fellow Nova Scotian Nathan MacKinnon.
In his article, Yohe laments those folks, some of whom he felt knew better, saying how they should know better than spreading such a baseless rumor. However, some fans aren’t convinced by the statement made by Crosby himself, who commented:
“I’m going to always be here. I just signed a new contract to be here. I’ve been very upfront about it — I’m a Pittsburgh Penguin.”
Sure, he is now, but what if general manager Kyle Dubas embarks on a full rebuild that would see the Penguins struggling to even reach the postseason for years to come. Would Crosby later signed elsewhere, perhaps in Colorado with MacKinnon, once he hits free agency?
Yohe seems adamant about Crosby not looking to finish his career elsewhere than Pittsburgh and is pretty much fed up with all the chatter.
“I’m not sure what else Crosby needs to say. He holds the keys, and he says he’s not going anywhere. He’s more of a fixture in Pittsburgh than fries on a sandwich or dodging potholes in March.”
He was not the only one pouring cold water on the Crosby trade rumors in recent days. However, he has to understand that, similar to many fans across the NHL, some pundits believe Crosby deserves so mych better than to finish his NHL career with a rebuilding Penguins club and an unpredictable GM.
