Seth Jones has just been traded.
The Chicago Blackhawks have pulled off a trade involving veteran defenseman Seth Jones.
According to multiple sources, the Chicago Blackhawks have struck a deal to trade away veteran defenseman Seth Jones pending an official trade call.
News began to break on Saturday night regarding a trade involving Jones, the Blackhawks and the defending Stanley Cup Champions, the Florida Panthers. The first to report the news appeared to be National Hockey League insiders Elliotte Friedman and Frank Seravalli, with both men reporting that the deal was well on its way to being done.
Update: Elliotte Friedman has now confirmed that this is a done deal with the return in this trade being both Spencer Knight as well as a first round draft pick.
Jones recently made public the fact that he was formally requesting a trade out of Chicago in spite of the fact that he is just in the third year of an eight year deal he signed with that franchise. To most it seemed unlikely that any contending team would be able to fit Jones' massive cap hit of $9.5 million under the cap, but the Florida Panthers have found themselves in a rather interesting situation thanks to the Four Nations Face-Off tournament.
During that tournament Panthers star forward Matthew Tkachuk suffered a significant injury and this would now appear to be confirmation that Tkachuk will not return at any point during the regular season, giving the Panthers considerably more cap space than would have otherwise been at their disposal.
Full trade breakdown:
Panthers receive:
Seth Jones ($2.5 million retained)
2026 Fourth Round Pick
Blackhawks receive:
2026 first round pick (conditional)
Spencer Knight
If the Panthers don't have a first round pick in 2026, the pick moves to 2027.
