The Montreal Canadiens have traded forward Sean Monahan to the Winnipeg Jets in return for a first round pick in this year's draft and a conditional third round pick in 2027. The condition on the third round pick depends on if the Jets win the Stanley Cup this spring. Insider Pierre LeBrun was first to report the transaction before the details were finally announced and made official.
The Canadiens landed a first-round pick, which is just brilliant from GM Kent Hughes: the Canadiens got a first rounder for taking Sean Monahan, now will get a first rounder in exchange for him.
On top of that, the Canadiens are not retaining salary on Monahan in this transaction.
Monahan was expected to be traded after Elias Lindholm was moved from the Calgary Flames to the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday night. Lindholm, who is a pending free agent, got the Flames a significant package in return, which includes forward Andrei Kuzmenko, Vancouver’s first-round pick and a conditional fourth-round selection in the 2024 NHL Draft, and defenseman prospects Hunter Brzustewicz and Joni Jurmo. The Canucks do hope to sign Lindholm long-term, but still pull the trigger on the trade without an extension included.
LeBrun had recently reported that the Canadiens could receive a first-round draft pick in return for Monahan at this year's trade deadline.
Dreger had also reported this morning that at least two NHL teams remain focused on the veteran and continue to do due diligence. And it looks like the Jets were one of them, and pulled the trigger. Dreger adds that
Monahan has recorded 13 goals and 35 points in 49 games this season after being limited to 25 games due to injury last year. In 730 career NHL games played with Montreal and Calgary, Monahan has collected 231 goals and a total of 514 points.
He re-signed with the Canadiens last summer on a one-year, $1.985 million contract, but had agreed to be moved to a Stanley Cup contender ahead of this year's deadline with the team.
