Scottie Upshall has been cut from training camp.

This seems like a pretty significant bump in the road for National Hockey League veteran Scottie Upshall.

According to a report from NHL insider Frank Seravalli of TSN, Upshall was released from the professional tryout off he was on with the Dallas Stars. The move comes in spite of what Seravalli describes as a "solid camp" from Upshall, something that has to be a huge disappointment for a veteran of over 750 career NHL games. Servalli reports that the Dallas Stars are currently "tight on contracts" and that this appears to be the primary motivation behind the organization's decision to release Upshall today.

Of course the big question now is what will become of Upshall moving forward, and this move now make him an unrestricted free agent very, very, late into the preseason. Most organizations around the National Hockey League will have already rounded out their rosters and Upshall will be hard pressed to find a new home regardless of how well he performed in camp for the Dallas Stars. That being said I would not be shocked to see an NHL team take a shot on Upshall with a league minimum type of contract, although that would require a team with the cap flexibility to accommodate such a move, as well as the contract space required to do so which immediately eliminates several organizations.

Perhaps the most difficult hurdle for Upshall here will be due to the fact that he did not play a single game during the 2018 - 2019 NHL season, missing the entire campaign. The last time Upshall played in the NHL was during the 2017 - 2018 NHL regular season. In that season he appeared in 63 games for the St. Louis blues, recording 7 goals and 12 assists for a total of 19 points. That is a long time however in the fast moving world of sports and it remains to be seen if Upshall's performance with the Dallas Stars this summer in training camp will be enough to get him a look elsewhere in the league.

Whatever the next chapter in Upshall's career may be it is at the very least commendable that the veteran has attempted to re-ignite his career after missing a full season this late in that career. We wish him all the best moving forward.
