Ryan Whitney lists a main order of business for Oilers

One major name is up for a contract extension before long.

The Edmonton Oilers are coming off one of the more bitter defeats in franchise history, having lost their second Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final since their heartbreaking setback in 2006. They were ultimately felled by the Florida Panthers, who initially led the 2024 championship series three games to none before a furious Oilers comeback effort that would fall just short.

And it's not going to be long before the second highest profile on the Oilers can become a free agent. Forward Leon Draisaitl, who has developed into one of the top players in the National Hockey League, has one year remaining on his current contract that expires in the summer of 2025.

For former NHL defenseman and current analyst Ryan Whitney, getting Draisaitl signed to a new deal is paramount to any future success that the Oilers can enjoy. He wrote the following on his social media account shortly after the disappointing Edmonton defeat at the hands of Florida:

“I knew it was bad news for the Oil when Bob didn’t skate yesterday. He was an animal tonight. Panthers showed up and went balls to the wall tonight. Amazing series. Need Leon to sign extension This is not the end for Edmonton they will get one. Happy for Paul Maurice.”

It was yet another incredible regular season for the German-born forward, who scored 41 goals to go with 65 assists. He also made no secret about whom he feels is the best player to ever lace them up, as evidenced by his comments regarding teammate McDavid in the immediate aftermath of the defeat.

Will the Oilers be able to hammer out a contract extension with Draisaitl, or will he eventually be heading for free agency?
