Rutger McGroarty receives a savage beatdown in the AHL.

Former Winnipeg Jets first round pick Rutger McGroarty was on the wrong end of a fight in the American Hockey League.

Talk about picking the wrong guy to mess with.

Former Winnipeg Jets first round pick Rutger McGroarty is back in the headlines this weekend and unfortunately for McGroarty it is once again for all the wrong reasons.

On Saturday night, McGroarty and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins faced off against the Springfield Thunderbirds and it would be during the course of that game that McGroarty would cross paths with Thunderbirds defenseman Michael Buchinger.

Buchinger had taken exception to a hit from McGroarty and in spite of the fact that Buchinger had 0 professional fights under his belt at that point, he quickly challenged McGroarty to drop the gloves. The two men would do just that, but it very quickly became clear that McGroarty had bitten off more than he could chew with Buchinger more than ready to hand out punishment.

Despite having no fighting experience in his pro career it would be a one-sided beatdown on the part of Buchinger who appeared to land 7 unanswered punches to the head of McGroarty without any response coming from the Penguins forward whatsoever. Instead McGroarty would just absorb the blows to the head before eventually falling to the ice, having never really put up a fight of any kind.

Buchinger was selected in the third round (88th overall) of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft by the St. Louis Blues and I think it is safe to suggest that the Blues prospect has grabbed some attention after he showed what he can do on Saturday night.

Here's a look at the fight:
