Rumor: Flames could flip a big piece from the Tkachuk trade.

Flames have a lot of options.

The Calgary Flames have, alongside the Florida Panthers, just pulled off what many are already calling the biggest trade ever made within the salary cap era of the National Hockey League. It was a monumental achievement on the part of Flames general manager Brad Treliving, especially considering the fact that he was working from a position of relative weakness, but his work is not done yet.

While the Flames are very likely to keep things fairly status quo after making their blockbuster move this summer, the fact of the matter is that Treliving is already receiving inquiries from other teams around the league about the possibility of making yet another trade deal.

Recently, the Fourth Period's David Pagnotta reported that several rival teams in the NHL have already contacted the Flames about the possibility of moving one of the pieces they've only just acquired in the Matthew Tkachuk trade, specifically forward Jonathan Huberdeau.

"As I mentioned a few minutes ago on SiriusXMNHL , some teams have already inquired about Huberdeau, wondering if Flames will consider flipping him," said Pagnotta on Saturday.

To be clear Pagnotta is not reporting that the Flames are actively seeking to flip Huberdeau, I suspect that they are not, but there does appear to be interest from other teams around the league in his services which could be a good sign for the Flames both in the short term and in the long term. Huberdeau is only under contract for one more season and as a result if the Flames fail to get an extension worked out they will likely want to trade him before letting him walk to free agency much in the way Johnny Gaudreau did earlier this month.

No word from Pagnotta on which teams might be interested in acquiring Huberdeau from the Flames, but the teams that were in the mix before Matthew Tkachuk was traded to Florida would likely be some of the candidates.

Huberdeau is coming off the best season of his career, one that saw him record 30 goals and add 85 assists for a total of 115 points over 80 regular season games.
