Rumor: Blockbuster deal brewing between Oilers and Rangers?

It was mentioned Saturday night on Sportsnet that the Edmonton Oilers are likely shopping Ryan Strome, despite only recently acquiring him this summer in a big deal that saw Jordan Eberle go the other way.

Elliotte Friedman speculated that there could be a fit between the New York Rangers and Peter Chiarelli's Oilers - but that it might involve a different player.

Chris Kreider has been rumored to be on the block - there had been speculation recently of a Kreider-Galchenyuk swap. Friedman believes there could be a deal involving Ryan Nugent-Hopkins instead.

This makes sense - Edmonton will have salary cap issues to deal with when Connor McDavid's new contract kicks in next season, and Nugent-Hopkins has long been rumored to be available.

The Rangers are struggling this season, with a meagre 3-7-2 record through 12 games. Edmonton is equally struggling with a 3-6-1 record, so a swap of this magnitude could serve as the jolt both teams need to rebound.

After losing Derek Stepan, New York's depth at center is quite weak - so the fit is clearly there.

Kreider has 5 points in 12 games this season, while Nugent-Hopkins has 6 points in 10 games.
