Jacob Markstrom slashes and injures his own teammate in Game 1.

An unreal scene in Game 1 as goaltender Jacob Markstrom slashes his own teammate.

An unbelievable scene has just unfolded in Game 1 of the opening round series between the New Jersey Devils and Carolina Hurricanes in the 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs.

The Devils aren't going to be very happy with their goaltender Jacob Markstrom after this one, especially not given the fact that 3 Devils have now left the game as a result of injury.

Roughly midway through the third period, Markstrom would do the unthinkable when he delivered a brutal slash to teammate Cody Glass, one that appeared to strike Glass in the stomach and/or groin arena. Markstrom wasn't aiming for Glass at the time and was instead attempting to take a chop at Hurricanes forward Andrei Svechnikov, but Glass skated in front of Svechnikov at the worst possible moment.

It seems that Markstrom caught Glass pretty good as well, with the Devils defenseman immediately collapsing to the ice and appearing to be in serious pain. Glass was writhing on the ice for several moments and never got up under his own power, with a trainer rushing out to help him and quickly carrying him back to the locker room.

Something tells me Glass isn't going to be very happy once he figures out what just happened to him.

Here is a replay of the full sequence:

And here is a close up of the exact moment Markstrom slashes Glass:

As if that wasn't bad enough, the Devils lost defenseman Brenden Dillon to injury earlier in the game as well.
