Report: The Sharks may be forced to relocate in 2025
The San Francisco Sharks? The Oakland Sharks?
According to San Jose Sharks president Jonathan Becher, the team may be forced to relocate after the 2024-25 season.
Becher spoke to the San Jose Hockey Now podcast last week and admitted that the team's arrangement with the city of San Jose to operate out of the SAP Center changes 'unfavorably' for the team in 2025 and that their best option may be to leave the beloved 'Shark Tank'. Fear not though, the team has a binding contract that will keep them in the Bay Area, so if they move they won'g be moving far.
“We’re in very regular conversations with the city. We’ve had a fantastic relationship. A lot of Bay Area sports teams have not had very good relationships with their cities. We are not one of them,” Becher said. “Conversations are going well. If you ask me this today, July 11, 2024, I don’t see much probability that we end up on [Jul. 1, 2025] in an unfavorable situation.”
Becher would go on to list San Francisco and Oakland as possible destinations for the team if it can't come to an agreement that would keep them in San Jose.
“(Owner)Hasso Plattner has been very clear. He’s a Bay Area guy. He wants to stay in San Jose,” Becher said. “And if for some reason, this site doesn’t work out, we would look at other places in San Jose first, and then, the rest of the Bay Area.”
