This just in, the New York Rangers have reportedly signed forward Kaapo Kakko to a one year contract worth $2.4 million.
The 2nd overall pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft scored 13 goals and 19 points in 61 games for the Rangers this past season. Needless to say, that's not the kind of production that the Rangers would hope for from one of their top selections. Kakko will be a restricted free agent (RFA) once this one year pact expires.
His best season came in 2022-23 when he produced 18 goals and 40 points in 82 games. Suffice it to say that his game will have to grow by leaps and bounds if he factors into the team's long-term plans. 2020 1st overall selection Alexis Lafreniere appeared to take some positive steps this past season with 28 goals and 57 points in 82 games, but Kakko hasn't shown the same kind of growth.
