Penguins make a surprising goaltending change on Monday.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have made a very surprising move in goal with their season quickly falling apart.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have made a surprising change in goal on Monday morning, one that I must admit I genuinely did not see coming.

In an official announcement through the team's social media channels, the Penguins have revealed that veteran netminder Tristan Jarry has been called back up the main roster. Jarry had been demoted to the American Hockey League earlier in the season due to his poor performance out on the ice, and it seemed very much like the Penguins were looking to move on from the much-maligned goaltender at the time he was sent down.

Since that demotion Jarry has played in 12 games for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, recording a 2.67 goals against average and a .908 save percentage.

Additionally the Penguins have made a corresponding move by sending 23 year old goaltender Joel Blomqvist back down to the AHL after a 15 game stint at the NHL level with the Penguins. Over 15 games Blomqvist recorded a 3.81 goals against average and a .885 save percentage.

Funnily enough Blomqvist's numbers at the NHL level were very close to what the Penguins were getting from Jarry prior to his demotion, with Jarry recording a 3.26 goals against average and a .886 save percentage at the NHL level this season.

It is unclear if the Penguins are attempting to give Jarry a chance to redeem himself, are hoping that bringing Jarry back will help them tank for a better draft pick, or even perhaps simply just attempting to showcase him for any teams desperately looking for some help in goal.

Stay tuned for more on this developing story.
