Rumours are still going in Pittsburgh as the fanbase wonders is general manager Kyle Dubas will be looking to move out some of their pending unrestricted free agent contracts prior to the March 7 trade deadline. One name that has come up a lot in trade circles is the one of defenseman Marcus Pettersson, who might be the most coveted defenseman at the trade deadline.

The top-four blue liner is a pending unrestricted free agent who makes just $4.025 million for the remainder of the season. Several rival clubs are said to have interest in Pettersson, who is reliable in his own zone and can produce as well. He becomes quite an attractive target on the market at his size of 6-foot-5, but now it’s believed he’s even more targeted because of Dubas’ insulting low asking price.

That’s because insider Frank Seravalli has suggested that Pittsburgh may not receive a significant haul in exchange for Pettersson.

“It’s not going to be a huge return,” explained Seravalli about the top defenseman on his trade board.

“He’s far and away their mos moveable asset. Outside of Pettersson, if you’re talking traditional deadline moves, who are the guys that really bring you value if you’re Kyle Dubas that you can easily move on without blinking?

“Move him out, get some assets back. If you want to take those assets later and package them for something else that you think can help you in a quick little retool, a one or two year window to maybe try and get back in a playoff spot with Sidney Crosby? That’s the route to go is use someone like Pettersson to move on.”

Seravalli explains it well how taking a discount here on Pettersson could provide some assets to use later on, however, you just know that losing him on the back end in Pittsburgh will be tough to swallow.

Especially if fans and teammates can’t see the bigger plan for the future.
