Owen Power sets a new record for Team Canada at the World Juniors!
What a performance.
Team Canada has a new record to add to their record books and it comes courtesy of the #1 pick at the 2021 National Hockey League Entry Draft.
The Canadians found themselves in an unexpected position on Sunday when they headed into the locker room down by a goal after 20 minutes of action, but an outstanding performance from one Owen Power has propelled the team right back into this game. Power, who was selected first overall by the Buffalo Sabres this year, is showcasing why many viewed him as such a special talent and has now become the first defenseman to ever record a hat trick for Canada at the World Junior Championship... ever.
Power started the rally for Canada when they were down by a score of 3 - 1, when he fired a long shit from the point that seemed to fool everyone, bringing Canada back within a goal.
After the Canadians had rallied back to tie the game at 3 - 3 they found themselves on the power play and once again it was Power who showed up huge. The young defenseman fired off a rocket from the faceoff circle to give his team the lead after previously trailing by a pair of goals.
Less than 2 minutes later, this time with the Canadians having a 2 man advantage, Power once again found the back of the net by pinching all the way up to the Czechian net. The Czechian netminder made the first few saves but likely had not expected the defenseman to be right on the doorstep when he gave up one too many rebounds.
Not only is this the first hat trick of this year's tournament, but it also happens to be the first hat trick ever scored by a Canadian defenseman at the International Ice Hockey Federation's World Junior Championship.
Something tells me the Buffalo Sabres are pretty happy with what they've seen here today, and no doubt a fan base that needs something to cheer for is also ecstatic at the prospect of having Power on their team someday soon.
