Ever since it’s been reported that Senators defenseman Jakob Chychrun might be having a change of heart about staying put in Ottawa, trade rumours have surfaced that the blue liner could be moved ahead of the March 8 deadline.

On Thursday night, Pierre LeBrun dug a little more into the speculation that Senators general manager Steve Staios could be listening to offers coming in from rival teams. In the latest edition of Insider Trading on TSN, LeBrun explained how clubs have already been calling.

“Staios and company like Chychrun. He’s got a year left after this year on his contract before it expires. There is some work left that would have to get done, perhaps as early as the off-season.

"Here’s what’s interesting, teams are calling on Chychrun, so obviously Staios has to listen. It would take a substantial offer and I’m not sure it gets done by the deadline, but I think the listening continues this summer.”

Chychrun was traded to Ottawa less than a year ago, on March 1, 2023, and could be on the move again at this year’s deadline, though LeBrun appears to believe an offseason transaction is more likely. Chychrun has one more year left on his contract and owns a 10-team no-trade list and therefore holds some power on where he could land. The defenseman is eligible to sign an extension starting July 1, but if rumours are true and that he has a change of heart about staying in Ottawa, a trade could come next.

When reporting about Chychrun’s preference to be moved, Bruce Garrioch of Postmedia hinted at the Edmonton Oilers, who have been looking to bolster their back end.

In the coming weeks, Staios is likely to meet with Chychrun’s Ottawa-based agent, Andy Scott of Octagon Hockey, to see what his client seeks for the future. Trade chatter could definitely pick up then, especially as we get closer to the deadline on March 8.

What do you think it would take for Staios and the Senators to pull the trigger on a Chychrun trade that would send the blue liner to a Stanley Cup contender ahead of the deadline?
