Tage Thompson and the Buffalo Sabres humiliated the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday, beating them to a pulp by the score of 9-4, but no one felt the embarrassment more than forward Johnny Gaudreau’s father.

Before puck drop, NHL on TNT had decided to mic up Gaudreau’s dad, who attended the game. As Pierre LeBrun explained on Insider Trading on TSN last night, all the mic’d up sound was just Mr. Gaudreau in stunned silence as his son and Columbus were down 6-1 after one period. The insider also mentioned that fans should not expected this humiliating loss to change too much for the Blue Jackets.

“The embarrassment was felt from top to bottom, I was told today by someone with the organization. And the players themselves, of course, having a players-only meeting after the game. But the reality is, this isn’t going to fuel GM Jarmo Kekalainen to go out and make a bunch of trades to try and get the team out of the bottom of the standings to salvage the year. The reality is they’ve had massive injuries, they’re too far down, they’ve dug too much of a hole (in the standings). They are going to take their lumps. Now they’re not going to come out and say that publicly, but the reality is this is a special draft, as we know, at the top in June, and that’s really the focus now for Columbus aside from the development of their young players.”

There is a sense that, because of all of the injuries, Columbus is now looking to fail to get the best chances at the draft lottery and top prospect Connor Bedard.

However, the lottery is still a long way to go, and it might just take this long for Gaudreau’s dad to get over this mic’ed up embarrassment…
