Earlier today, we reported from Florida that former Panthers head coach Andrew Brunette was arrested for driving under the influence.
Brunette, who is currently an assistant head coach for the New Jersey Devils, was taken into custody on multiple charges including DUI and disobey of a stop of yield sign.
Details from what actually happened to Brunette emerge later on Wednesday as Andy Slater of FOX Sports revealed that the Devils’ associate coach was leaving a bar on his golf cart when police arrested him for DUI.
Slater also reported that Brunette’s golf cart was illegally parked outside this bar and was given a ticket even though he told them he was leaving. Brunette then went back in to get his wife. The deputies waited 15 minutes and then saw him drive away under the influence, police say.
A previous report pointed to other incidents. According to Local 10 News, “in May of 2022 he pled guilty for going 58 mph in a 40 mph zone and paid a $260 fine, and in February of 2021 he was stopped for allegedly going 27 mph in a school zone, but that case was eventually dismissed.” Both incidents occurred in the area of Deerfield Beach, which is where he was arrested for the DUI.
Brunette came in to Florida as the interim head coach of the Panthers following the team parting ways with Joel Quenneville early in the 2021-22 season after the Chicago Blackhawks’ sex scandal involving Brad Aldrich. Brunette led the Panthers to their most successful season in franchise history and first playoff series victory since 1997. He was let go by the Panthers who decided to hire Paul Maurice as the team’s head coach for 2022-23. Prior to the season, Brunette was hired as an assistant to Lindy Ruff in New Jersey.
