Mitch Marner reacts to controversial 'no-goal' call.
Mitch Marner questions NHL referees after a controversial call cost his team a goal.
The Toronto Maple Leafs found themselves embroiled in some minor controversy last week surrounding some controversial calls made by National Hockey League officials on the ice, and unfortunately for the Maple Leafs this week started off much the same with yet another controversial call during a Maple Leafs game on Sunday night.
This time the call surrounded a goal scored by Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies during the opening minutes of the game, a goal that would eventually be called back by the NHL officials reviewing the video evidence. While the goal itself was unquestionably a good goal, the play would eventually be called back due to a high stick that had occurred earlier in the play, one that came from Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner.
Following the conclusion of the game Marner was asked to share his thoughts on what had transpired on the ice, and the Maple Leafs star forward made it clear that he wasn't quite sure why the call had gone the way that it had. In fact, Marner would even admit to reporters that he had openly questioned the officials on the ice after the ruling had been made.
"I don't know," said Marner. "I was just hoping I got the bounce... I asked the refs after if it was because of my my height that it got called off but I've had some tough bounces with stuff being called off right now so hopefully it changes."
You can hardly blame Marner for being frustrated given the fact that he likely feels bad about costing one of his teammates a goal, but there's been plenty of debate on both sides regarding whether or not the officials made the right call.
Here is a look at both the goal itself and the subsequent replays that led to the goal being overturned:
