Sidney Crosby’s raw video is tough to watch after making history
Crosby broke an NHL record he shared with Wayne Gretzky, but was in no mood to celebrate. Watch below:
On Thursday night, Sidney Crosby passed Wayne Gretzky. The Pittsburgh Penguins’ captain became the first player in NHL history to register 20 point-per-game seasons. The accomplishment took place in the first period of last night’s game in Buffalo when Sid fired a shot by Sabres goalie James Reimer to cut Buffalo’s early lead in half. He surpassed the mark first set by Gretzky, who finished all but his 20th and final NHL season in 1998-99 averaging a point a game.
The goal was Crosby’s 28th goal of the season and his parents and long-time girlfriend, Kathy Leutner, were in the seats to witness the moment.
However after the brutal 7-3 loss to the Sabres, Crosby was in no mood to celebrate his astonishing accomplishment. The captain was too distraught absorbing the loss as the milestone was overshadowed by the Penguins’ poor performance.
“It’s hard right now, after a loss like that. But, yeah … I think there’s a lot of guys who contributed to that,” Crosby said. “I’m thankful for a lot of the guys I’ve played with who contributed to it. It’s a special milestone, but I play to win.”
As you can see below, Crosby’s words were barely audible as the scrum of journalists tried to avoid talking about the beatdown he just suffered on the ice.
I’m sure Crosby will eventually realize the feat he just pulled off. However, after a brutal beatdown by the Sabres, we can understand how he was not in the mood for celebrations.
Crosby reached 80 points in his 72nd game in a season during which he has already missed two outings due to injury. Pittsburgh has eight games remaining on its schedule and is expected to, once again, miss the postseason.
