The Toronto Maple Leafs have made a couple of goalie moves on Thursday, first reassigning Dennis Hildeby to the Toronto Marlies (AHL). They made the following move ahead of tomorrow’s game against the Detroit Red Wings, calling up Matt Murray.

Murray was Toronto’s starter last Friday against the Buffalo Sabres, making 24 saves on 27 shots and helping the team to a 6-3 win. It was his start in the NHL in 21 months and it was easy to tell that the victory was a weight off his shoulders.

The veteran goaltender was however sent back to the minors after his big win, in order for the Maple Leafs to preserve roster flexibility and avoid exposing him to waivers. Murray’s exemption from waivers remains intact as long as he plays fewer than 10 NHL games or spends less than 30 days on the active roster.

After spending the start of the season with the Marlies in the AHL, Murray posted an impressive .931 save percentage and 1.85 goals-against average for a 4-1-3 record.

As for Hildeby, he was the Maple Leafs’ starting netminder three times this season, getting a 2-1-0 record with a 3.68 GAA and .875 save percentage.
