Maple Leafs finally get good news on Auston Matthews.

The first real positive update on injured Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews came today.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been without captain Auston Matthews for nearly the entire month of November thus far with the Leafs' forward dealing with an injury that has reportedly been nagging him since training camp. Making matters worse is that Matthews' injury has been shrouded in a good bit of mystery, although fans may now be able to breathe a sigh of relief.

On Saturday morning, the Maple Leafs got what appears to be their first real bit of positive news since Matthews has been injured when he returned to the ice for the first time in two weeks. Matthews had last practiced on the morning of November 9th ahead of a game against the Montreal Canadiens, and has not played in a game since November 3rd against the Minnesota Wild.

In a video captured by Maple Leafs writer Nick Barden, Matthews can be seen working on the ice with a member of the team's staff. Matthews briefly works with the puck before taking a shot on goal, looking much like his normal self as he goes through the regular motions of a workout on the ice.

Much to their credit, the Maple Leafs have performed quite well with Matthews out of the lineup and have even overtaken the Florida Panthers for first place in the Atlantic Division while their captain has been forced to remain on the sidelines. In fact the team has lost just 1 of the 7 games that they have been forced to play without Matthews in the lineup, posting a record of 6-1 in his absence thus far.

There has been no official word regarding Matthews' return to the lineup but seeing him workout on the ice a full day ahead of the team's next game has to be viewed as a positive sign. The Maple Leafs are set to face off against the Utah Hockey Club on Sunday night, although that may still be too early for a return to game action for Matthews. The Leafs will have two more games next week, once against the aforementioned Florida Panthers on Wednesday and one against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday, which may be more likely destinations for a Matthews return.

Stay tuned for more details on this developing story.
