On Thursday, a tragic announcement was made that USF coach Amir Abdur-Rahim sadly passed away at the very young age of 43 due to ensuing complications after a medical procedure.

The University of South Florida’s men’s basketball team not only lost a key member of its organization, but also a friend, and his passing affected more than just the club.

The Tampa Bay Lightning, being from the state of Florida, also felt heartbroken over the loss of Abdur-Rahim and issued a poignant statement following his sudden passing.

Just ahead of last season, Abdur-Rahim joined USF’s basketball staff and made sure the team got back on track. In just his first season, he led the Bulls to a 25-8 record, the highlight of his career, which earned him the American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors. USF went on to win the regular season conference championship and was ranked as high as within the NCAA Top 25 for the first time in the history of the program.

Abdur-Rahim had more than 20 years of experience in coaching after graduating from Southeastern Louisiana University in 2004. Abdur-Rahim always had a focus on player development and recruitment, and was behind for the recruiting of Anthony Edwards, who later became a top pick in the NBA draft, during his time at the University of Georgia.

Abdur-Rahim was known for his experience, character and love for the game that inspired many athletes across America, including the Lightning’s players.

Amir Abdur-Rahim is survived by his wife, Arianne, and their three children. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them. May coach Abdur-Rahim rest in peace.
