Kevin Bahl goes down after taking a puck to the back of the head.
Calgary Flames defenseman Kevin Bahl forced to leave the game after taking a puck to the back of his head.
The Calgary Flames got a bit of a scare on Sunday night when Flames defenseman Kevin Bahl quite literally put his well being on the line when he sacrificed his body in an effort to help his team secure a win.
Bahl and the Flames faced off against the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday night and it would be during the final seconds of that game's third period that Bahl would suffer the injury.
The Flames were in their own zone with just over 30 seconds left on the clock and were desperately trying to hold off the Hurricanes in an effort to guarantee at least one point. Unfortunately for the Flames the puck would find itself on the stick of Hurricanes defenseman Jaccob Slavin who had a pretty good chance at hitting the net, but Bahl would make the ultimate sacrifice to make sure the puck never got there.
Bahl dropped to the ice and threw himself in front of Slavin's shooting lane, successfully blocking the shot but unfortunately doing so with the back of his head. Bahl immediately went limp on the ice and remained there for several moments before eventually getting up and skating out under his own power.
What made this incident so scary is the fact that Bahl is coming off of a recent concussion, but thankfully initial reports appear to indicate that he is going to be ok. Flames insider Eric Francis was able to provide an eye witness account of Bahl's status following the conclusion of the game, with Francis indicating that Bahl looked "fine" when he saw him.
