Edmonton Oilers forward Evander Kane returned to San Jose, California last night to take on the San Jose Sharks for the first time since the team effectively gave him the boot earlier this season. Kane and the Oilers managed a tidy 3-0 victory, which is maybe the most important narrative from yesterday but, as always with Kane there was just as much narrative off the ice as on the ice.

Before the game Kane made it clear that he didn't really think about or care about what kind of reaction he'd get from the crowd or from his former teammates. And, as you might expect, the reaction was less than savory:

Kane's history with the Sharks is long and storied and the final chapter is still being written as we wait to see the outcome of his contract termination appeal, but suffice it to say that the two sides have had a messy breakup. Maybe not as messy as the breakup between Kane and his estranged wife Anna Kane... but strained just the same.

Sharks reporter Sheng Peng has been at the forefront at a lot of reporting on Kane over the past few years and has covered many of the former Sharks forward's transgression, so maybe that's why Kane reacted to strongly to Peng's questions today during media availability.

When Peng as Kane point blank today why things didn't work out for him in San Jose, Kane got noticeably upset and even took a bit of a shot at Peng.

Check it out:

"We've continued to beat this dead horse over and over and over again...You probably write more articles about me than you write about anybody else on the team."

“So I don’t know. I’m not going to get into that. I’m here to play hockey, and you’ll continue to make those judgments and write reports.”

- Evander Kane

Alrighty then...

The fact of the matter though is that things obviously didn't work out between Kane and the Sharks and Sharks fans deserve to hear Kane's take on things.

As for the Sharks, coach Bob Boughner made it clear that there's no hard feelings but that the Sharks are happy to be rid of the distractions that Kane brought to the team.

“We just wanted to get back to a team that we just come to the rink with no distractions and play hard. If things didn’t work out here for him, I hope all the best for him somewhere else.”

- Bob Boughner

And you know what? Is over it anyways.

“I’ve kind of moved on,” Kane indicated. “I’m happier where I’m at.”
