John Tortorella goes off on controversial benching of Matvei Michkov.
A fired up John Tortorella addresses the latest controversy surrounding Matvei Michkov.
Philadelphia Flyers head coach John Tortorella is at it again with the polarizing coach once again drawing the ire of fans after another controversial coaching decision on Sunday.
This time around it is Tortorella's decision to bench Flyers star rookie Matvei Michkov that has caused all the fuss, with Tortorella benching the youngster for an extended period of time after he did a poor job of backchecking on a play that would lead to a goal for the New Jersey Devils.
Following the conclusion of the game, Tortorella was asked about the decision to keep such a promising young talent, one who is in need of all the development time he can get, on the bench for so long. In typical Tortorella fashion, the Flyers head coach had a fiery response for the media whom he showed very little respect for with his comments.
"There are a number of things that come into play," said Tortorella. "And you are at a disadvantage because I'm not going to give you that info. It's not always the play on the ice that I'm trying to teach, so let me give you context before you start all your bullshit."
Tortorella also dismissed the notion that fans had figured out why Michkov was being benched, suggesting that there was a deeper reasoning that only he is aware of.
"Don't just look at the play," said Tortorella of Michkov's backchecking on the Devils' goal. "No he didn't do the job as far as back checking, no he didn't do the job in the offensive zone. There are more things that come into play. So don't make a big deal out of it if you think you need to."
I doubt very much that Tortorella's comments will have the intended effect, with the fiery response from the head coach likely only adding to the backlash over his decision to bench the Flyers star rookie.
