Jagr sells his hometown team in Kladno, will now officially retire
The living legend can now walk off into the sunset.
The term 'living legend' gets thrown around too often these days.
But in case of future Hall of Famer Jaromir Jagr, it's completely warranted.
Jagr is playing in his 37th and final professional season at the age of 52. Jagr, of course , plays for his hometown Kladno Knights the team that he has a 100% ownership stake in. In other words, Jagr pays himself.
Jagr has announced that this season will be his final pro season, but... well... he has said that for the last couple seasons now but he somehow keeps managing to find himself back on the ice. The truth of the matter is that as owner of the Knights, Jagr knows how valuable his presence is to the team not just on the ice, but for marketing purposes as well. Kladno sells a ton of '68' jerseys and Jagr has gone on record that he doesn't believe the team would be able to continue existing if it weren't for his involvement. That is... unless some fresh money gets invovled.
Enter: Czech legend Tomas Drastil.
Jagr confirmed to ESPN today that he is selling 80% of his ownership in the team to Drastil, but will maintain a minority stake in the club.
Jagr would say that his reason for selling the team to Drastil is to give the team more financial stability as he enters the next phase of his life.
"Something is coming to an end," Jagr said. "But a new era, and I hope a more successful one, is about to start."
As much as I hate that Jagr's reign is coming to an end, he deserves to end his career on his own terms.
Again, like I said... he's a living legend.
