Jack Campbell enters the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program

The goalie is struggling and is getting some help.

On Friday, it was announced that goalie Jack Campbell has entered the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistant Program and will therefore be away from the Detroit Red Wings for an indefinite period of time.

Under the terms of the joint program, he will return to the Club when cleared for on-ice competition by the program administrators.

Campbell found a new home in Detroit this summer when the Red Wings signed him to a one-year, $775,000 contract as a free agnecy on Opening Day on July, 1st.

It has been a tough couple of seasons for Campbell, who had made the opening-night roster for the Edmonton Oilers at the start of 2023-24. He was however later put on waivers and reassigned to AHL Bakersfield. In 33 games with the Condors, Campbell had a .918 save percentage and 2.63 goals against average.

After signing a five-year, $25 million contract with the Oilers ahead of the 2022-23 season after spending three years with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Campbell was expected to be the No. 1 goalie in Edmonton, but never met expectations.

He was selected 11th overall by the Stars at the 2010 NHL Draft, and played just one contest with them, before getting traded to the Los Angeles Kings. He then came to Toronto and hoped to stick around longer in Edmonton before he was bought out and then signed in Detroit.

The buyout will be over the duration of six seasons and cost the Oilers $1.1 million in cap space in 2024-25, climb to $2.3 million in 2025-26 before growing up to $2.6 million in 2026-27.

Wishing Campbell all the best as he gets help from the players’ assistance program.
