Vancouver Canucks star forward Elias Pettersson is dealing with quite a lot as his contract extension talks continue with the trade deadline approaching. After last night’s loss at the hands of the Los Angeles Kings, Petterson agreed to meet with media, but started things off saying: “I’m talking about this game only.”
Prior to the game, reports had emerged that the Carolina Hurricanes attempted to trade for Pettersson before his agents Pat Brisson and JP Barry resumed negotiations with the Canucks.
It has now been reported that there is some good momentum in the talks, though team insider Farhan Lalji of TSN revealed that the ongoing issue lays into the term of the contract.
“I’m led to believe that term could be the biggest hurdle in the negotiations. Canucks want longer term, while Pettersson may want shorter.”
There were reports suggesting that an 8-year contract extension was in the works, though it now sounds like it may be too long for Pettersson. He is set to become an RFA after this season and will want a significant pay raise from his current $7,350,000 AAV, though he might also prefer a bridge deal seeing that he’s only 25 years old.
Pettersson is on pace to break the 100-point barrier for the second consecutive season. But now what his fans care about is getting him inked in Vancouver for as long as possible.
