Huberdeau and Weegar on the big difference between the Flames and Panthers.

The two new Flames share their thoughts.

There was some major offseason turmoil for both the Calgary Flames and the Florida Panthers this summer as both teams saw significant changes to their roster over the course of that offseason leaving both teams looking significantly different to start the 2022-23 National Hockey League regular season.

Of course at the forefront of that turmoil were Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk, Flames forward Jonathan Huberdeau, and Flames defenseman MacKenzie Weegar all of whom experienced a pretty drastic change in scenery going from the cold weather of Alberta Canada to sunny Florida in the U.S.A and vice versa.

It's been a few games now however and those players have now had some time to settle in, and over the weekend two of them were asked to share their thoughts on some of the differences between their current and former team. Those two were the aforementioned Huberdeau and Weegar, and interestingly enough the two men shared very similar responses to the question.

“We were playing zone in Florida and here it’s man-on-man," said Huberdeau on Saturday. "Sometimes, I kind of get away with it, but I think I have to be a little better at following my guy. But I think it’s just a little adjustment and I’ll be fine.”

Huberdeau and Weegar play different positions, but in spite of that it seems like they've come away from their experiences with a similar mindset.

“You have to win the right way here," said Weegar. "I think, in Florida, you could get away with maybe a run-and-gun type game or a comeback for a 7-6 win. Here, it’s 2-1, 3-2, 1-0 games. Even if we win 7-6 here, it’s not the right way.”

While neither man mentioned him by name, it certainly sounds like this has Darryl Sutter written all over it. The notoriously demanding head coach has always expected excellence from his players and it appears that this holds true for both Weegar and Huberdeau. Interestingly enough it sounds also like both Huberdeau and Weegar welcome the change, with both men seemingly eager to take on the responsibility that has been placed on their shoulders.
