Hockey Canada under investigation again after player is threatened by teammates

Coaches allegedly suggested the player move to another team, while police allegedly told them, “kids will be kids.”

According to a report from TSN investigative reporter Rick Westhead, Hockey Canada is cooperating with its third-party investigators regarding multiple incidents on a Brantford, Ontarion U15 (Players aged 13 and 14 years old) where a player threatened to kill a teammate on a group chat.

The Brantford Minor Hockey Association confirms that an investigation has been opened after receiving complaints from the alleged victim's parents.

Westhead reports that the team's players had a group text chat titled "kill (Name Redacted)" and that the player was threatened with violence, rape, having pucks shot at his head and having his throat slashed with a skate blade.

When the child's parents brought the news to the team's coaches, the coaches merely suggested moving the boy to another team with no consequences for the alleged bullies on the team. Even worse, they were told by police that "kids will be kids."

From Westhead:

Needless to say that this story has the potential to rock Hockey Canada once again if the details go public.

Personally though, I think this is less of a 'Hockey Canada' or even a 'hockey' issues, so much as it is a parenting issues. Unfortunately, we're seeing all too often in Canada that there is a deep-seated sentiment of bullying and entitlement amongst its players, coaches and executives. The fact of the matter is that Hockey Canada and a lot of its associations have enabled this type of behavior for decades.
