Free agent Tony DeAngelo returns to NHL with new contract, but lands on waivers!

Last week, it was announced that defenseman Tony DeAngelo had departed from the KHL’s SKA St. Petersburg. Due to family reasons, DeAngelo reached a mutual agreement to leave the club and will return to North America.
Upon his return, he was linked, as a free agent to different teams, and on Friday, the New York Islanders announced they have signed DeAngelo a one-year contract for the remainder of the 2024-25 season. Per Frank Seravalli, this is a porated league minimum at : $775,000.
With the defender coming back to the NHL from the KHL on a new deal, DeAngelo will be consequently placed on waivers on Friday by nature of playing earlier this season in Russia. If he clears by tomorrow's deadline, he will be able to join his new teammates in New York.
Through 34 games with St. Petersburg, DeAngelo became the third in team scoring and first among defensemen with 32 points counting six goals and 26 assists. This was his first season in Russia following an eight-year NHL career that counted 371 outings and stops with the Arizona Coyotes, New York Rangers , Philadelphia Flyers , and two separate stints with the Carolina Hurricanes. He last played in Raleigh before the move to Russia.
DeAngelo now gets a chance back into the NHL where he could add to his 48 goals and 162 assists for 210 points alongside 329 penalty minutes. DeAngelo also added 13 points through 26 postseason contests, but will have to help the Islanders reach the playoffs as they currently sit outside of the portrait, eight points out of the last Wild Card spot in the Eastern conference.
