Former Oilers GM Ken Holland linked to new NHL team.
Former Edmonton Oilers general manager Ken Holland may already be moving on to a new team.
Former Edmonton Oilers general manager Ken Holland may not be waiting very long before joining the ranks of a new National Hockey League franchise.
Following the conclusion of the Oilers run to the Stanley Cup Final last season, the Oilers and Holland announced a mutual parting of ways at the end of his contract. The move made Holland, one of the most experienced executives in the entire league, a free agent that was free to take on any role that he desired across the league.
Although there has been no official announcement of any kind, there are now indications that Holland may have already made his choice when it comes to his next NHL team.
The news was first leaked by former NHL player Jordan Schmaltz, who on Friday revealed that his sources were informing him that Holland would be joining the NHL's newest franchise in Utah, the Utah Hockey Club. Schmaltz did not provide any details on what role Holland would take within the organization, although the position of general manager is already occupied by Utah GM Bill Armstrong.
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman would follow up on Schmaltz's report indicating that Holland had indeed been invited to camp, due in large part to his connections within the organization, with Friedman reporting that there was "nothing formal" to report at this time.
The Smith Entertainment Group purchased the Arizona Coyotes this summer and moved the team to Utah and it would make sense that a new ownership group would seek out an experienced mind in the sport to help guide them through some of the early days of owning a new NHL team.
It remains to be seen what role Holland will take on with no official announcement or even rumors of what position he might take within the new organization.
Holland has decades of experience under his belt as an NHL executive having served as general manager of both the Detroit Red Wings and Edmonton Oilers, and also boasts a great deal of championship experience as a four-time Stanley Cup winner with the aforementioned Red Wings.
