The Philadelphia Flyers have not as of yet officially put an end to their 2021 - 2022 National Hockey League season, but it is now clear that the team is already well into the process of shutting things down and looking forward to next season.
On Saturday, Philadelphia Flyers interim head coach Mike Yeo confirmed that 3 members of the Flyers roster would not return this season. Those players are goaltender Carter Hart, veteran forward Cam Atkinson, and defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen. It's worth noting that all of the players being shut down were out due to injury and all are currently on long term deals with the Flyers. It seems likely that the Flyers are looking to let some of their core roster members heal up given that there's little point in bringing them back for any games this season.
Atkinson will end his first season in a Flyers uniform, he was acquired in the trade that sent Jakub Voracek to the Columbus Blue Jackets, with 23 goals and 27 assists for a respectable 50 points in his first 73 games as a Flyer. He also collected 10 penalty minutes on the season and finished with a plus minus rating of -2.
Carter Hart managed to produce better numbers this season in spite of the team's struggles, finishing the season with a 3.16 goals against average and a .905 save percentage over 45 regular season games. A not insignificant improvement over the 3.67 goals against average and .877 save percentage he recorded over 27 regular season games during the 2020 - 2021 campaign.
After giving up a first round pick for him at last year's National Hockey League Entry Draft there were whispers that the Flyers were looking to move Ristolainen ahead of the trade deadline, but instead Flyers general manager Chuck Fletcher surprised many by signing the Finnish defenseman to a new long term deal. Ristolainen ends his first season as a Flyer with 2 goals and 14 assists for 16 points over his first 66 games with the team, accumulating 38 penalty minutes and finishing with a plus minus rating of -9 on the season.
