Early in the third period of last night’s game against the Canucks in Vancouver, Philadelphia Flyers goalie Samuel Ersson left his crease, went down his team’s tunnel and did not return. When his departure was announced, it was said to be due to an undisclosed injury.
However, insider Elliotte Friedman for Sportsnet dug a little more and finally found out what pushed the poor netminder to give up his net and get some help from the trainers. According to Friedman, Ersson was removed from the game because of dehydration.
Ersson blocked 18 of 19 shots in 42:36 of ice time before having to leave the contest and getting replaced by teammate Carter Hart. who drew into the game as a result.
Hart made eight saves in relief. The Flyers scored three goals in a 2:06 span late in the second period and ended the Canucks nine-game point streak with a 4-1 win.
Philadelphia’s calendar is quite busy to end the year as they are set to play in Seattle later tonight against the Kraken and then again on Sunday against the Flames in Calgary.
While Hart is likely to start in the contest against the Kraken regardless, the Flyers could have to summon a goaltender from the minors to serve as the backup if ever Ersson isn’t available.
Ahead of Thursday’s outting against Vancouver and the unfortunate dehydration, Ersson had gone 4-1-1 with 2.26 goals against average, .919 save percentage and the aforementioned 32-save shutout against Detroit.
Let’s hope he’s feeling better and hydrated today.
